Question 1 of 714%

Where are you in your child's ABA journey?

Select one.

You know your child best

Helping Your Child Build Skills for Everyday Life

Every child develops differently. ABA therapy can support communication, emotional regulation, safety, and independence through goals tailored to your child.

Independence

“I want ordinary routines to feel more manageable.”

Goals may include toileting, getting dressed, mealtime routines, self-care, play participation, and everyday independence.

Communication

“I wish I knew what they were trying to tell me.”

ABA can help children build ways to express needs, feelings, and preferences through speech, gestures, or communication devices.

Big feelings

“Small changes can turn the whole day upside down.”

Therapy can support coping skills, transitions, requesting breaks, and strategies to better manage frustration and overwhelm.

Safety

“I'm always watching because I'm worried they'll run.”

ABA may target practical safety skills, asking for help, responding to directions, and reducing dangerous behavior patterns.

The goal is not to change who your child is. It is to help your child build useful skills and to make everyday life feel more manageable for your family.

What is ABA therapy, and how can it help?

Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, is an evidence-based therapy approach that helps children develop meaningful skills through individualized teaching, practice, and positive reinforcement.

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) guides your child’s treatment plan. Goals and recommended hours are based on an individual assessment.

Is ABA like school? Not exactly. ABA is individualized therapy, and learning may happen through play, routines, one-on-one teaching, social opportunities, and daily activities.
Will my child just sit at a table all day? No. A comprehensive program should include movement, play, breaks, social interaction, and learning across different parts of the day.
Why would some children need a full-day program? Some children benefit from more opportunities to practice skills in different routines and settings. The recommended number of hours is based on an individualized clinical assessment.
Do we need to know everything before contacting Sunshine? No. Many families are just beginning their ABA journey. Sunshine can help you understand next steps, insurance, and whether full-day ABA may be a fit.
A day at Sunshine Autism Center

What Does a Typical Day at Sunshine Look Like?

A daytime program may include play, individual teaching, daily routines, and breaks. Here are examples of what your child’s day could include.

Morning arrival

Getting comfortable and settling in

Greeting familiar staff, practicing transitions, and easing into the day with support that fits your child.

Throughout the day

One-on-one learning through play

Individualized activities may target communication, early learning skills, behavior support, and treatment goals in an engaging way.

Peer opportunities

Social interaction and shared activities

When appropriate, children may practice play, turn-taking, waiting, and interacting with peers in structured ways.

Daily routines

Snack, self-care, and requesting help

Everyday moments can become meaningful learning opportunities for independence and communication.

Movement & regulation

Breaks, movement, and sensory needs

Children need opportunities to move, reset, and regulate. A supportive day includes those needs, not ignores them.

Family connection

Collaboration that extends beyond the clinic

Sunshine works to keep families informed so skills can be supported beyond the therapy setting.

Step Up For Students + commercial insurance

ABA Therapy May Be More Affordable Than You Think.

Sunshine regularly helps eligible families explore Step Up For Students FES-UA scholarship funding toward qualifying ABA therapy expenses, including potential commercial insurance copays and deductibles.

  • Help understanding your commercial insurance benefits
  • Guidance exploring Step Up For Students eligibility
  • Support understanding whether qualifying copays or deductibles may be covered
Not enrolled full-time in public school? That may be an important factor when exploring Step Up eligibility. A full-day ABA schedule alone does not guarantee approval, but it may make the conversation especially relevant for some families.
How it can work

Two sources of support, working together.

For eligible families, the combination of commercial insurance and Step Up funding may significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs for comprehensive ABA care.

Commercial insurance

May provide ABA coverage, subject to benefits, deductibles, copays, authorization requirements, and medical necessity.

+

Step Up For Students

May help eligible families with qualifying ABA-related expenses, including certain out-of-pocket costs where permitted.

When eligibility, available funding, and expense rules align, qualifying out-of-pocket costs may be covered in full.

Eligibility, scholarship balances, approved expenses, and documentation requirements apply. Funding is not guaranteed for every family.

Common questions

It’s okay to have questions.

Starting ABA can feel like a big step. These are a few of the questions families often have.

Is full-day ABA right for every child?

No. A qualified BCBA evaluates each child individually. A full-day program may be recommended for some children, while other children may need a different schedule.

How many hours of ABA will my child need?

For some children, comprehensive ABA may involve 25–40 hours per week when clinically appropriate. The number of hours is based on an individualized recommendation, not a one-size-fits-all expectation.

Can Step Up For Students really help with copays and deductibles?

Eligible families may be able to use available FES-UA scholarship funds for qualifying ABA-related expenses, including certain out-of-pocket insurance costs where permitted. Sunshine can help explain the process and considerations.

Does my child need to already be in ABA?

No. Many families contacting Sunshine are completely new to ABA therapy. The purpose of the page and assessment is to make it easier to understand your options.

When you’re ready

Let’s talk about what your child needs.

Share a little about your family. Our intake team will help you understand your options and what comes next.

Start with a few questions →
Your next steps with Sunshine

You’ve taken the first step. We’ll help with the next.

Thank you for telling us about your family. Your inquiry has been received, and our intake team will reach out to learn more about your child and discuss next steps.

You do not need to have all the answers—or every document ready. We’ll talk through your questions and help you understand what getting started could look like.

What to expect from our first conversation

Our intake team will reach out using the contact information and preferred contact method you shared. If we miss you by phone, please check your voicemail for a message from Sunshine.

We’ll talk about what matters most to your family, your preferred clinic, and a schedule that could work for you. We’ll also explain insurance verification and what needs to happen before an assessment can be scheduled.

You’ll have time to ask questions. This is a conversation to help you understand your options, with no commitment to begin services.

A few things to have handy

If available, gather these before we connect:

  • Insurance card: front and back, plus the policyholder’s name and date of birth.
  • Diagnostic report: your child’s autism evaluation and any ABA referral or prescription you already have.
  • Your family’s schedule: school or preschool hours and times you could regularly attend clinic.
  • Previous records: relevant ABA assessments, treatment plans, or an IEP, if applicable.

Missing something? That’s okay. Tell us what you have, and we’ll explain what else may be needed. Our team will provide instructions for sharing records securely.

Tell us what a better day would look like

You know your child best. Think about a few everyday moments you would like help with:

  • Expressing needs, asking for help, or communicating discomfort.
  • Toileting, getting dressed, meals, or other daily routines.
  • Transitions, big emotions, or safety concerns.
  • Joining in play, enjoying activities, and trying new things.

We’d also love to hear what your child enjoys—their favorite games, activities, and interests. Those details help us get to know your child beyond the challenges.

Questions worth asking us

  • What would my child’s day at Sunshine look like?
  • How are goals chosen, and how will we know my child is making progress?
  • How will you keep my child engaged and help them feel comfortable?
  • How will I be involved and receive updates?
  • What are the insurance steps and possible costs?
  • What is available at our preferred clinic, and what happens next?

Write down anything else on your mind. You do not need to know ABA terminology to have a useful conversation.

A note about getting started: Submitting an inquiry does not schedule an appointment or confirm coverage or a start date. Our team will review these details with you. Therapy recommendations are individualized following a clinical assessment.
